In circulated condition a 1942 dime is worth only about $1 for its silver content.

As for the cent, please check again. It's steel, not silver. Well over a billion were minted and they sell for about 35 to 50 cents.

It would cost you more in gas or postage to sell them than you would make in profit. My advice would be to keep them as reminders of that long-ago era when the U.S. was in WWII. The steel cent in particular is a symbol of the war: they were struck from scrap steel because copper was needed for making ammunition.

What is a 1979 silver penny worth?

There were no pennies made from silver. So you either have a penny struck on a wrong planchet (worth about $50) or more likely something somebody has plated (no added value). Please note that, at one point, people discovered that dipping cents in mercury would make them look "silver." The mercury bonds fairly well with the copper. Excessive handling of such a plated cent, though, could leave a small amount of mercury on your hands, which wouldn't do very well for your health.

Is a silver penny worth money?

A "silver penny" is a steel penny. They were minted in 1943, during World War II, because of the copper shortage. To a collector, it may be worth something, yes, but certainly no amount you could retire on.
