They're not really worth that much, they're worth more to a collector than a civilian. A genuine mask that was issued to a soldier but never used will go for less than $100. One that was used might go for more if it was used somewhere important to a conflict area, but once again, it would not sell for as much as you might think.
Sorry to tell you, but the only way you're going to be sure is if you take it to a specialist in military equipment. Try writing to these guys, they might be able to help you out.

Everyone in Britain were issued a gas mask even the civilians, this was in case enemy troops had dropped poisonous gas. This method of warfare was favored in world war 1, however everyone still got a mask in world war 2 as an added precaution.
