Obtaining your teaching certificate varies a little bit from state to state. In general, you need to first complete a teacher education program either through an accredited ungraduate or gradaute college degree program. In your teacher education program you will have to take required courses based on what level and subject area you wish to teach. In addition, you will need to complete student teaching which some schools call a teaching internship. You will spend a semester teaching at the age level and subject you wish to become certified in. Usually this teaching internship lasts from 12-16 weeks in length. You spend the entire school day in the school teaching and learning with help from your supervising teacher. To gain teaching certification you will also need to take the Praxis I or II standardized test. Each state board of education outlines which test to take and the minimum score you need in order to pass. You will also complete a teaching application packet with your state department of education.
To get a teaching job first a person has to graduate from an accredited 4 year university majoring in the field of elementary education, or higher education. An internship will also be required.
