The U.S. Mint's website ( usmint 'dot' gov) lists the specifications of all current circulating coins. In fact, cents made since mid-1982 are composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. That gives the above experiment a small absolute error but a large relative error. In any case billions of cents are minted each year and anything as recent as 1998 that you find in change is only worth 1 cent.
