It is not known. We are not even told how they were remunerated, apart for the gladiators (who were slaves) who, were are told, received prize money when they won a fight and, if famous and popular, received generous donations from rich men and emperors. Most actors were slaves. Those who were Roman citizens, like other entertainers (such as dancers, musicians and acrobats) as well as prostitutes and pimps had the lowest status in Roman society: infamia (in-, 'not,' fama, 'reputation;' i.e., person without reputation/honour). The word denoted damage to one's reputation and esteem (extimatio). In legal terms it involved certain legal exclusions. An infamis (plural, infames), a person of infamia status, was excluded from public office, could not be represented in a trial, and could not provide testimony in court by virtue of his reduced extimatio and could be inflicted to corporal punishment, which was reserved for slaves. Still, this did not prevent popular entertainers form socialising with the elites. Some of them became lovers of very important men.
The punishment for some crimes was the reduction of a person to infamia for a period of time.
