In 1898, the U.S. declared war on Spain, which the Spaniards lost. After the war, a treaty was signed in Paris, France in which transferred ownership of several territories from Spain to the U.S. including the Philippines. The treaty also stipulated payment of US$ 20 million for the Philippines.
