Try computer. There weren't a bunch of computers around (not the general purpose ones similar to what we have now) and the only one available at the time was for the military - ENIAC. It cost between $400,000 to $600,000 (today more than $4 million) and took up about 700sq ft, it weighed around 30 tons (60,000 pounds.)

Yes there were computers in 1948. They were different than the types we have today, being much larger but less powerful and not being able to do the types of things they do now.
