There were no "maids" in this time. Women in waiting took care of the queen and the king had men who did the same. It was considered an honor to be the Keeper of the Chamber or the Privy. These people generally were the son's and daughters of nobility hoping to meet someone in court and to learn court manners/styles. An example of this was the Boleyn sisters. Mary Boleyn was sent to the English court and ended as mistress to Henry. Ann Boleyn was sent to the French court and then returned to the English court as a Lady in Waiting to Queen Catherine. As we well know, she became Queen for a thousand days and bore Henry Elizabeth, but the Boleyn sisters were very typical of the young ladies sent to court.

Mild maids were usually agricultural serfs, who were not paid for such work, but were provided with a place to live. They could earn money by doing other work, but were paid very little.
