Much of the time the majority of the poorer populous that existed in medieval times were not paid with money, but rather, in return for work usually, their employers paid them in food and shelter - in essence they basically worked for their life; their basic living requirements. Thats probably the closest you would get to 'average' in medieval times because only a minority of the population was made up of nobles, knights and 'higher' people of the sort.
