The Russians had delayed the onset of D Day by causing an Eastern front that diverted much of the German army's power. When D Day eventually happened many Russian prisoners from this front were now working for the Germans guarding the Atlantic Wall. Most of them promptly surrendered when the invasion started.
The Allies chose Normandy as the Germans were not expecting landing there.
The Germans had all expected the invasion to happen at the Strait of Calais, about 100 miles north. German troop concentrations were much higher and at better readiness there.
The Normandy D Day was far larger than the D Day for Okinawa. Over 5000 ships and hundreds of planes and hundreds of thousands of troops were involved in the Normandy Invasion. The invasion on Okinawa was peanuts compared to that.
How much will it cost to get to Normandy?
The German Military, for the most part, did not expect the Allied invasion to land at the widest part of the English Channel, Normandy. They expected (again, for the most part, not entirely) the invasion was more likely to come at the Pas de Callais, the shortest point of the English Channel and therefore the shortest distance between France and England. This prompted German forces toreinforce the French beachhead at the Pas De Callais with much more men, supplies, defenses and defense positions than in Normandy. Only German General Rommel, placed in command of Normandy shortly before the D-Day invasion, suspected the Allied attack on the Normandy beachhead. There was not enough time, though, to reinforce Normandy to his liking.
Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy in World War 2, in which the Allied invasion of France took place. General Dwight Eisenhower (United States) and British General Bernard Montgomery planned the invasion under this name, which later was known as D-Day.
The American Forces fought with the other Allied countries while the USSR fought more on their own but they still planned strategy and shared resources together. The Russians lost over 10 million servicemen in the war whereas the US lost 400,000 servicemen. The Russians were invaded by the Nazis on their own land. The US did not have an invasion from the Russians. The US had managed to develop the atom bomb, but the USSR did not. The Russians hated the Germans very much because of the 20 million Russians the Nazis killed and raped. The Russians took revenge on the Germans for doing that. They raped hundreds of thousands of women. The Russians were communists while the Americans were democratic people. The USSR had a dictator, but the Americans had a leader they chose to represent them. The Russians suffered much more during World War 2 than the Americans did.
It was important for Canada because there were men from almost every Canadian town in the invading army and navy supporting them. Canada had a much higher percentage of their men at D-Day than America did.
Many invasions took place over the years. Most of them where in cold war times and WWII era. Normandy was pretty much planned by the US. If it was between 1945-2000 it was probably against the Soviets(Russia).
The term D-Day was used by the military to indicate the day an attack or invasion was to be begun. During the course of World War II, the term was used so much that it was replaced with others, such as A-Day, which was used for the invasion of Leyte. There were many D-Days, but when the term is used without qualification or other context, it nearly always refers to the D-Day invasion in Normandy, on June 6, 1944. There are links below.
It was not much differnt then now. For example the U.S soldier's bootcamp wasn't much differnt then it is now. The only real differnce was the general fear of communist invasion and the constant training they recieved just in case of a war with the Russians which obviously never happened.
