∙ 13y agoIn short, a "hacker" can earn anywhere from nothing to everything. Consider that both the average guy with a soldering gun has the same earning potential as Bill Gates, hypothetically speaking (considering that Gates himself arose from one of the former types).
Your definition of "hacker" needs clarification, for which I submit the following (my own words, and I've been flamed every time I've made such a statement...but I'm ready this time).:
The traditional "hacker" traces the name to the MIT definition that was derived several decades ago from "tunnel hackers", who roamed tunnels beneath the campus to discover exactly where they led. From this inquisitive spirit, the word "hacker" was derived.
The publicly accepted usage of the word hacker deserves mention: A hacker (by this definition) is one who circumvents computer security measures for ulterior reasons.
The aforementioned is one school of thought. Another claims that the word applies to any individual who seeks to understand something beyond conventional knowledge. Therefore, many individuals (from engineering to artistic backgrounds) have been referred to as "hackers".
The following line was from the previous definition, and is still valid in my opinion (though it is quite editorial (and what definition isn't? :P)):
Who ever wrote that doesnt know what he/she is talking about... a hacker is not a criminal (by definition). One who obtains information by circumventing security is known as a "Cracker".

The person asking the question was asking how much and ETHICAL hacker gets paid.
There are two types of hackers, black hat hackers, and the ethical hackers.
Black hats hack personal backing information and stuff like that for their own profit.
Ethical hackers are paid by a company to hack into their own company to test for security flaws.
