There's no "average" cost of a commercial airplane. There are several things that go into the fly-away price of a commercial airliner.

The most obvious is the model - the bigger the plane, the bigger the price tag.

Next is the configuration. If you want to start an all-first-class airline and you order an A320 equipped with 100 wide leather seats and a gourmet kitchen to allow food to be cooked in flight, it will not be the same price as the same plane equipped with 220 Economy-class cloth seats and a warming oven.

Third? How many do you want? If you and I had gone to the Paris Air Show to order planes, you bought 20 and I bought 50, my 50 will cost less per plane than your 20.

And although I hate to say it, how good your negotiator is will also play a role in the price of your planes.

Across the street from one of Boeing's factories in Seattle is the Museum of Flight. In front of the museum is a bronze statue of an astronaut with a dove on one hand. If two customers ever buy the same model of commercial airplane for the same price, that dove will fly away.
