Answer The answer is that it depends. In most states psycholgists cannot prescribe medications. However, psyhcologists do have the authority to prescribe in Louisiana, New Mexico, and in some instanses the US Armed Forces. Answer Only Psychologists who are licensed in Louisiana and New Mexico, and complete a two year Masters degree in psychopharmacology can prescribe medications to their patients. Psycholgists cannot prescribe medications in the other 48 states, but they have the right to contact that patient's GP and suggest that the patient be put on a certain medication. Psychologists study a majority of their time on human behavior and not on psychopharmacy or neuropharmacy, and Psychiatrists are very much heavily orientated and taught in psychopharmacy and neuropharmacy as well as biomedical studies.
