∙ 13y agoIt shouldn't cost you anything to take a dog to a shelter. But please keep in mind it could very well cost your dog his life. Many shelters do not have the resources to care for all of the animals turned in to them every day, nor do they have enough adopters to move animals back out of the shelter. If you take your dog to a shelter, there is a very real possibility he could be put down.
If your dog is a purebred or a clear mix of a certain breed, you could try contacting a breed specific rescue (Doberman Rescue of Illinois, or New York Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue, for example). Otherwise try to find a shelter in your area that has a strong reputation for being no-kill.
