My router was 32 feet from the PlayStation 3 and the next available reasonable cable size was 25 Feet. If you are closer your cable will cost less and you could also use a Cat 5 cable with good results. Because I only had a cable connection and did not have a router I purchased a Cisco Linksys wireless-n-broadcast Router to allow me to set up the PS3. I found than I could have purchased the cheaper router without wireless capability, but at least now I also have wireless if I need it for something else. The router I purchased was wireless and also had four different slots to attach the Ethernet cable. I was using only one for the computer. I have a basement and it was easy for me to just go down from one room and back up behind the PS3 in the other room. I found that the reception was much better and the connection quicker with the Ethernet Cable than it was using a wireless connection. What ever set up you have you need to connect the cable from the back of the router to the back of the PlayStation 3. Once the connection is complete you need to go to the setting on the PS3 and go down to the very bottom and click network connections. Then click Internet connection settings. You should have no problems letting the machine complete the connection. If your router is password protected then you might need to enter that information. I can not remember if I only had to do it with the wireless connection.
