Most genealogists are amateurs and do not get paid. A relative few are professionals paid for their work, but they are not paid a salary. They are paid by the assignment, or on an hourly basis for a specific project. Annual incomes vary widely and no one number applies to all or even to most.

The genealogist who is able to make a living by working full-time in genealogy is a very rare individual.
