It depends on several factors such as the drivers age, marital status, sex, driving record, etc. Often times it doesn't cost anything to add another driver. Unless the driver is underage, has tickets, etc. there would be no cost. It can even reduce the overall rates on the policy, it just depends on the circumstances. However the cost to not add a driver to your policy can b e substantial. If an unlisted driver has an accident the insurance company can and will deny the claim for material misrepresentation (lying). Read your policy carefully. Most companies require that everyone in the household be listed or excluded and that any regular drivers be listed on the policy. This doesn't prohibit you from letting someone use the vehicle for a day or two as long as they don't live in your household. However, it is never a good idea to loan out your vehicle because you are loaning your insurance as well.
