If you are buying a snake that is small and will be very big someday, to save money, buy the biggest cage from the start. This way, you will not have to get a new cage each time the snake grows. These are the more expensive cages to buy, clean, mantain, and get accessories for.
Small snake cages are cheap. Buy a 10-20 gallon tank and a bowl and some bedding, and the price should be no more than $100. This price does not include the actual snake OR the lamp fixtures.
If you are buying a lizard like a leopard gecko, a common pet, buying a cage is about $90, the sand to fill the cage floor is $35, and and the lighting fixtures may be enough to bring your purchase up to $250.00 Buy a heat mat and you will be almost up to $300.00. I bought a gecko once and the final price was about $330.00, which included the gecko, calcium powder, bowls, and a rock.

Small Water turtle cages are CHEAP depending on the turtle's size. I caught a baby painter turtle and I brought it home. We took it to a pet store and the guy told me, '' Oh yeah, you need these UVB lights that are $300 and last about a week to keep the thing healthy... also, it needs this and this and this and that will total your price to like... (I forget the price but it was along the $1000 line... EEEEK!)" -So I decided to buy a critter cage- $20 gravel $10 and put a rock inside for the turtle to sit on. I have had this turtle for 6 months and it is the happiest, healthiest turtle I have ever seen and is the size of a large coin.

-Can be expensive to filter, clean and maintain. The most expensive thing you'd need is the large cage... but otherwise it is not that bad.
Land Turtles and Tortoises
The lamps needed are not that expensive and last for a while. But you do need to buy them or the tortoise WILL DIE since it's body will get too cold.
The sand is cheap but varies depending on the amount bought...
The problem with these pets is that they CAN grow VERY LARGE and can be $250 when you buy them in a pet store.
The cages ARE easy to maintain, though.
