In many cases returning home was not an option, because their homes had been destroyed and/or because of antisemitism in their previous home countries, such as Poland.
Poland suffered enough being positioned between russia and germany. Right after they got their independence in 1918 after 120 years of Russian-austrian and german division, they were attacked by russia in 1920. Up to 1930 the goverment fought wars againts lithuania and ukraine for borders and 1930 was the world crisis. 9 years later hitler attacked Poland and 2 weeks later Russia did too. Poland just could not resist continuous invasions and wars.

V-Mail was a method used to transmit mail back to US. The soldiers were supplied with a form that they filled in the Address and Return Address at the top. Below this was a blank section where the soldier wrote his letter. The letters were photo-copied and the film was shipped back to the US. Once in the US, the film was printed about 1/4 the original size (i.e., shrunk). Each letter was then placed in an envelope so the Address was visible and it was mailed. I have read the statistics of how much volume and weight of mail this process saved. Wikipedia says: "The 37 mail bags required to carry 150,000 one-page letters could be replaced by a single mail sack. The weight of that same amount of mail was reduced dramatically from 2,575 pounds to a mere 45." V-Mail was named for "Victory Mail". See Link for history of V-Mail and examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-mail
A regular envelope cost $1.89 to send to Mexico.
It cost 98 cents today - July 27, 2010
That will depend on where in the world you are sending it from, which you have not specified. Your local post office will give you the most up to date rates, as they change sometimes.
As of January 22, 2012 the rate is 45 cents. You could also buy the "forever" stamp which will never lose its value as a current stamp.
One must take the to-be mailed item to a post-office for its weight - it is the weight of an item that will determine the postage (or the amount of stamps to be placed). What does one do, if they have a scale and wishes to avoid going to the post office?
Address label, (or possibly a postage stamp).
As of May 2011 any postcard over 4.25"x6" and less than 6.13 x 11.5" is considered regular First Class and is $0.44
