I bought a used one a few years ago for my '96 Outback for less than $200 and replaced it myself. As for labor, the only answer that has any meaning at all will come from the person who is willing to do the job. Prices vary widely especially depending on where you live.
I would guess that a pro should do it for around 4 hours' labor. Took me over twice that long but it was my first time and done with the car on jack stands in my garage.
Differentials seldom go bad in these. Be sure that is your problem.
how much does it cost to repair the rear differential in a subaru outback

The only answer that has any meaning would come from the person willing to do the job. These seldom give any problems (yours is the first I have encountered) and there should be used ones out there.
The Subaru Outback outweighs the Honda CRV In 10 out of 13 categories I have looked at. The average cost of the Subaru is about $1,000 more than the Honda, but its worth it for all the extras you get.
For what it cost to replace the radiator and/or repair the engine, I would stick with the stealership original Anti-Freeze coolant. Better be safe than sorry...
cost me about 180 bucks a year ago in colorado, if that helps
The average cost to replace brakes on your 2004 Subaru is $70 per wheel. The cost to replace brakes will vary depending on several factors.
Though it could be technically possible, it's probably not financially responsible. It would likely cost more than an automatic 1999 Subaru Outback with a rebuilt engine. The main problem would be in changing it from manual to automatic. Or, there are no automatic/manual "engine's", the engine IS separate from the transmission, this is an easy swap provided you have th skills, the wiring harness and ECU will need to be swapped as well.
The new catalytic converter and gasket for my 2005 outback wagon was $830 installed at an independent Subaru specialist. Are you sure that yours is not covered under warranty (80,000 miles, I think)
I have seen prices from a couple hundred each to over a thousand. The only answer that has any meaning comes from the person willing to do the job.
