On my 2002 I was quoted 2500 dollars. It`s a major job on the 4.0 SOHC engine.
I believe the Explorer does NOT use a timing belt, but rather a timing chain
The 4.0 liter SOHC has ( 3 ) timing CHAINS and if it is 4x4 it has a 4th chain for the balance shaft
On a 2002 Ford Explorer : The 4.6 liter V8 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )
The timing marks for a 2002 Ford Explorer are located on the timing chain and cam shaft sprocket. They must be aligned with each other to set the initial timing.
In a 2002 Ford Explorer : The 4.0 liter V6 engine has ( 3 timing CHAINS ) The 4.6 liter V8 engine has ( 2 timing CHAINS )
2002 and up four cylinders have a timing chain no belt.
You can replace a timing chain on a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire by visiting a local mechanic and having him take care of it for you. This is a tricky part to change yourself.
The timing chain does not have a service interval. It only needs replaced if there is a failure.
On a Ford Explorer : The 1996 to 2001 , 5.0 litre V8 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN ) The 2002 and newer , 4.6 litre V8 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )
75000 miles
there is no timing belt -- only a timing chain that does not need to be replaced
The 4.0 liter SOHC - V6 engine has ( 3 ) timing CHAINS
