It depends. Some will charge $75-80, and some will be free!

You also, of course, definitely need to get your pooch vaccinated and purchase supplies, food, etc.

How much does it cost to shelter an animal at an animal shelter?

The upfront costs are not really the total cost. I have bought dogs, cats and horses from shelters for as little as $30.00. The cost of keeping a horse though, for example, is probably in the area of $200.00 a month when you add in hay, vet, farrier and feed. Make sure you can afford to keep the animal maintained correctly.

Are the dogs at the SPCA trained?

Most animal shelters will do an assessment on animals before rehoming them. They will normally put the dog in a number of situations to test their aggressiveness. If a dog is too aggressive then they have no choice but to put it to sleep because it is too dangerous for rehoming. Some of the dogs at animal shelters are trained, either by the previous owners or the shelter. However not all of them are trained, for example new puppies. A lot of dogs in the shelters have come from abusive homes, so will need re-training to adjust to a normal, loving home.Taking a dog out a shelter is much better than breeding more dogs only for them to end up in the shelter themselves. There are millions of dogs waiting for someone to love them - why make more?

Where dogs live at?

Dogs can live pretty much anywhere if they can manage. All dogs need is water, food and shelter like us. They mostly live in homes or shelters.

Where could you get a puppy that costs less than 300?

At your nearest animal shelter. They have many dogs, and some are purebred if that appeals to you. People give up their dogs for all kinds of reasons, and most of them are wonderful pets. The people at the shelter are often able to help you select the best dog for exactly what you want. There will be a fee, because shelters are expensive to run, but it will be much less than $300!!
