There was a book called "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" which had a corporation on the planet "Margaretha" that built custom planets. A solar system would be very expensive and require many planets, a sun and assorted moons. The cost would be extremely prohibitive.

∙ 13y agoCurrently the cost is about $10.00 per claimed watt of power for the completed system. Typically solar panels run at about 70% of rated power for about three hours each day (average). Heat decreases this level of power.
Most current systems will pay for themselves i under thirty years, unless weather becomes an issue. My system has been hit three times by storms. Payback is currently about 65 years.

∙ 7y agoNot sure where you got that ridiculous figure. For a normal home with up to 4 people living in it, the cost ranges from $4500-$5500 for an open loop system. And $5500 to $7000 for a drainback or glycol system which are necessary in climates that expect freezes annually. The cost is further reduced by tax credits and incentives. In many locals, such as Austin, TX, electric company rebates can push the cost below $2000, making the payback time 3 years or less. The tankless design never runs out of water! These are perfect for solar installations that may encounter weeks of cloudy weather.
