Almost twice as fast. Trains in 1870s would have gon 20-30 miles per hour. Today they go about 55- 65 mph
Yes, there were steam trains in the 1870s. The first steam locomotive was developed by Scottish inventor William Murdoch in 1784. By the 1830s, steam trains were in use in much of the world.

Electromagnetism was discovered in 1911 and it led to the mag-lev trains. These trains made rail travel much faster and used less energy.
In the United Kingdom trains of this era could average 120km/h (75mph). This means a journey of 75 miles would have taken 1 hour. It is not that much faster today!
maglev trains can help simply because they don't use gas. They use magnets to keep them in the air and moving. Which means they will be better for the ozone layer. They are also much faster than regular trains.
Coal is still used in many steam engines today. Coal is not used on diesel trains or electric trains simply because it is not fuel for them. Electric trains and diesel trains are the most common trains in use, and not trains capable of using coal, because they are more efficent and much less costly to maintain.
Electromagnetism was discovered in 1911 and it led to the mag-lev trains. These trains made rail travel much faster and used less energy. A magnetically levitated train has no wheels, but floats-or surfs- on electromagnetic waves.

Freight trains have been around for a long time, but the modern trains we have today can do much more. Unfortanutly, I do not have the answer, but good luck on your report.
Once railroads were invented, there really wasn't much impetus to dig canals. Trains can go up and down hills, which is difficult and expensive to do with canals and locks. Trains are also faster.
The rail system is very good through out Europe.
1. A bus is ridden on the rode, while a train is ridden on railroads. 2. A bus carries people and not much else, while a train carries people & lugage. 3. Buses are cheaper than trains. 4. Trains are more entertaining than buses. 5. Trains are faster than buses. 6. Buses are more comfortable than trains.
