Fertilize the crowns early in the spring, before the spears start to grow. You can use an all purpose 10-10-10 fertliizer at a rate of 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per 100 square feet. You can fertilize agian after your last harvest to feed the roots and sustain the plant through the winter.
Generally, asparagus that puts up skinny stalks is immature. It takes 3 yrs for an asparagus root to put up decent sized stalks. If the asparagus is older, it probably needs some fertilizer to boost it. I recommend the organic asparagus food sold by Gardensalive.com
How much fertilizer will be used and what kind of fertilizer.
It is possible you gave it too much water or too much fertilizer. Fertilizer can burn the roots.

Male asparagus does not go to seed. That makes it much easier to manage. Male asparagus are resistant to rust, which is a fungus disease to which asparagus is highly susceptible. The males are also resistant to fusarium rot and crown rot. Another benefit to male asparagus is that is produces more than a female plant. Jersey male asparagus is considered to the premium asparagus.

That probably depends on what the frozen asparagus would have had done to it.... if it was to be baked then probably not. Asparagus doesn't require much cooking, and it is likely that if the frozen asparagus was to undergo heating for any length of time then that might be enough time for the fresh asparagus to cook. You might blanche the asparagus first - plunge it into boiling water for a minute before using it in the recipe.
well asparagus is very very dear, it would be about £2.30 a piece. I hope that helps!!
