According to microsoft.com, you need 1.5GB of free space for Windows XP Professional. If you're installing Service Pack 2, you should have at least 1.5GB more space, and an additional 1.75GB if installing Service Pack 3.

I can say that my XP Pro SP3 installation currently requires 3.13GB for the WINDOWS folder.
