The US government gives Israel roughly $2 billion annually in military aid, most of which serves as an indirect subsidy for US defense contractors since 80% of funds given to Israel must be spent with US businesses. Less than 20% actually goes into Israeli coffers. This indirect subsidy means that there is a vested interest for a number of different Congresspeople and Senators who have major defense contractors working in their districts to maintain the military aid since it functions like any other form of pork-barrel spending for their districts.

Answer 1In terms of Israel's political ascendancy, this was primarily due to the Israeli government's investment in internal infrastructure and support of the sciences coupled with freedom of speech. This led Israel to have massive economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s, catapulting it into the First World. While it is true that Israel received funding from the Western Nations during this period, it was directed primarily at military acquisition, similar to the aid received by Arab States from the Soviet Union. Therefore, this could not have been what made Israel distinct. It is notable that Israel survived during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-9 not on account of Western Support (as the United States, United Kingdom, and France all imposed a regional arms embargo), but through Soviet arms delivered by way of Czechoslovakia. Additionally, the United States only assisted Israel in the post-Six Day War period, with Israel's primary allies being the United Kingdom and France prior to that point.Answer 2The US aids Israel with funding and equipment.Germany also paid large amounts of war reparations.Israel did NOT get this powerful on its own.If it wasn't for the West, they would probably have been invaded by their neighbors quite fast.

The United States support for the State of Israel comes from a variety of sources. Israel has cooperated with the United States on diplomatic issues, military and intelligence exchanges, large amounts of trade, and significant technological investment. In addition, there a numerous Americans who support the State of Israel because of religious convictions on top of the already-listed reasons. As a result, the US has supported Israel with arms in order to defend such a useful ally without having to commit American boots on the ground.
