In a 1997 Ford Aerostar ( REAR differential ) With the 7.5 " ring gear ( 3.5 U.S. pints ) With the 8.8 " ring gear ( 5.0 ) * traction lok , add 4 ounces of friction modifier
Usually you fill it to the bottom of the hole.
Depends on which differential you have but in most cases 4 to 5 pints should fill it.
Replacing the front differential on a 1997 Ford Explorer may cost anywhere from $400 to $800 in parts alone. If one wishes to get brand new parts, the cost for replacements can be expected to double. Labor will likely cost between $800 to $1500, which brings the total range anywhere from $1200 to $3100.
You should be able to get one from a scrapyard. many have parts searches they can do for you online & probably cheaper than a repair. A gear set is 200.00 & you can get a rearend for that in some places.
till it comes out of the fill hole about a quart
SAE 75W90 synthetic gear oil
Aprox 4 pints in the rear differential.
3 1/2 pints should fill it.
I know there is a vent hose on the front differential of the 4x4 so if the differntial fluid expands too much when warmed up it makes quite a mess ( its happened twice on my 1995 XLT after having front axle seals changed and the front differential fluid was topped up ) I believe the automatic transmission also has a vent hose
