The answer below is wrong. Columbus made a deal with the Spanish crown to find a water route to Asia and bring them gold, gems, and riches. He found Hispinola in the Bahamas and didn't find what he promised. He never knew that North America existed and pretty much died a sick man who was considered a failure. His son's tried to sue the crown for the items they promised Columbus in their contract with him, but they lost.
Christopher Columbus was looking for a way to the Far East, Japan, India etc. He thought the world was much smaller than it is.
