well, i own a '97 ram short box w/sport pkg that has the 5.9L (360) F.I. horsepower rating is 235 stock. pretty poor for a V-8 huh. so i pulled the 360 and installed a 440 magnum that produces close to 600 hp. (much better) the best part is blowing by those guys that thought their hemi trucks were so powerful. my suggestion is if you want more power, install a stroker kit in your 360. 360's are rebuild friendly and you can re-use some of your stock parts in a mild performance upgrade. your 360 with a stroker kit install can acheive 400hp+ depending on what components you add. the biggest thing is your crankshaft. bigger crank=more hp. a good stroker kit will cost around $1700. check hughes racing engines website- they are mopar dedicated. bear in mind that there are other costs involved block/cyl head work you will need to have done, but i think considerable gains in hp and torque can be had at an affordable price. a total figure ballpark for everything, if you do the install yourself, $2500. you will want to get a bigger camshaft. small block magnum engines' camshafts are small and dont provide alot of lift to allow more power to be made. so add another $300 or so cause you will want a good roller cam. check out comp cams website. they have a cam selectio software free to download. it will select the right cam for your engine and application. you will like the selection guide, alot of need things it will show you.
