thatwould depend on the purpose of the insulation sound or thermal?

Assuming thermal the available height of the ceiling would dictate what you can achieve but 50-100mm Knauf brand would be a good average.

However you may want a natural insulation or sound inslulation combined.

You should fits consider how much space you have, what type of insulation type and function you require and work out your optimum purchase from that.

How much attic space needs to be between the roof and an arched ceiling if you live in Texas and have hot summers?

You only need 8-10 inches. That is enough for insulation. You only need enough to put in the insulation you want. I'm in Arizona and only have 1' between the ceiling and a flat roof. But it's full of insulation. Works for me. Possible help added: A ridge vent for a pitched roof is a great way to help keep the heat down in an attic.

Your Wife and you just purchased out first house and you discovered that the entire basement has plactic sheeting between the drop-ceiling and the floor joist Should you remove this moisture barrier?

NO.. it was probably put there for a purpose. Might have been some form of insulation to keep the upstairs less drafty or very likely it is keeping moiture from getting to your mardwood floors upstairs.. much better to ventilate the basement a bit that remove the Plastic.. Might even have been someones attempt at asbestose abatement years before..

When do you consider a basement unfinished?

To simplify this as much as possible, an unfinished basement is a basement that is lacking the elements that would typically be seen in a finished room. These would include items like flooring, ceilings, insulation, and finished walls. Typical unfinished basements are as such quite bare, usually with the cement of the foundation making up the walls and the flooring, with the inner workings of the ceilings exposed.

How much insulation should you have in your ceiling in your house in Columbus Georgia?

The more the merrier. R19 at least but add a roof ridge vent if you dont have one. That is cheap - 2-3 hundred. My home has no wall or floor insulation. actually 6 to 8 inches of fiberglass blown or batts is neither too much nor too little for any place in the u.s. always better a little too much than too little.
