A US Dollar is a foreign currency and not legal tender in Canada so it is technically not worth anything - just like a Bhat, Yuan, Ruble or Euro. However Canadian merchants and banks will often accept US currency at an exchange rate established by the banks.
In the past year or so this rate has varied from a bit over par to a bit under par. This means you should expect to see about a dollar Canadian for a US dollar - maybe as much as a $1.10 Canadian or as little as $0.90 Canadian. Coins are usually treated as being at par for the equivalent Canadian coin and may even work in Canadian vending machines.
The US $100 bill is a special case. Counterfeiting of US bills is common, the US $100 is a favorite. Canadian merchants and banks will often not accept US bills in this denomination.
