F is not the mint mark that is the inital of the name of the designer of the coin the mint mark is located on the back below 5 cents
If the mint mark is a D the nickel is probably worth no more than a dollar. If the mint mark is an S it could be worth around $3.00 By the way, there is no such thing as a 1938 liberty nickel. The only nickels minted in 1938 were buffaloes and Jeffersons.

Check it again. By 1980, all U.S. nickels had mint marks. That said, a 1985 nickel is worth 5 cents.
What you're seeing isn't an E and isn't a mint mark. It's an "F" which is the initial of the coin's designer James Earle Fraser. The mint mark, if there is one, would be on the back under the words FIVE CENTS. (FWIW, the US has never used an E mint mark) Please see the question "What is the value of a 1937 US nickel?" for more information.
If it's a regular nickel, 5 cents. If it's a silver war nickel (with a large mint mark on the back), $2.

The value of a Jefferson nickel with a p mint mark will vary depending on the year and the condition of the coin itself. A person should have the coin appraised for an accurate value.
