I pleaded guilty to a ticket for driver failure to wear seat belt in Amherst, NY, and the penalty fine was $135! I called the town court to inquire about this exorbitant amount and the desk clerk claimed that's the starting penalty. There's absolutely no use pleading not guilty whether you were wearing the seat belt or not. It's your word against the police officer's and don't bank on him/her not showing up to court--any town that has nothing better to do than enforce seat belt laws will have more than enough free time to send their cops to petty trials. Ugh. Very frustrating. I still say these laws are unconstitutional.
