As a point of reference, I paid $1600 last year for a complete rebuild of my existing transmission (2001).
I called a few shops and priced the job - then worked on finding referrals on the quality of their work.
I have had other vehicles that I found a mechanic to do the replacement with a transmission I purchased from a salvage yard - and paid about $500-600.
