SIMMs are pretty much obsolete. DIMMs are the currently popular choice for desktop style computer memory. (Laptops use SO-DIMMs.)

Two ways to see how much memopry is installed in a computer is the general tab and on the computer.
750 GB of memory is much more than your average off the shelf laptop with come with pre-installed. Most laptops you find at Best Buy, for example, come with 5-10GB of memory. If it's a 750 GB hard drive you're looking for, your search will be easier. HP and Toshiba are both good brands. You could pick up a laptop for $500-700. Asus has a high capacity 16GB memory card preinstalled for around $2000.
Most likely, the system is set up to use some of its RAM as Video Memory. Many laptops come with graphics chipsets that are built into the motherboard, and that do not have their own video memory. In these cases, the BIOS can be used to configure how much RAM to use as Video Memory. If you have 1 gigabyte of RAM installed, and the BIOS is configured to use 256 megabytes for Video Memory, your computer may report that you have 768 megabytes of memory.
This Acer Aspire One netbook has 1GB of memory installed.
Many of the memory manufacturer websites have tools which will scan your computer and let you know how many memory modules and the size which are installed. There are also programs which you can download which will tell you the same thing. The other option is to open your computer and determine the number of memory modules that are installed, normally the memory modules will all be the same size. To ensure the size of the memory modules you should remove them and read the labels.
How much memory your computer has depends on the size of the computer and how much memory you purchase, not whether it is a laptop or a desktop. Desktop computers tend to have more room for RAM than laptops because there is more physical space in the computer; however, it is entirely possible to have more memory on your laptop than on your desktop. It all depends on how much RAM you purchase and install on your computer.
Good Laptops can be around $300-$400. One with not that great of memory will be in the $200's. Hope this helps.
RAM is Random Access Memory and controls how many programs can run quickly and smoothly at the same time. The more RAM, usually the faster the system will perform operations. If you have access to inside the system (obviously when completely turned off and un-plugged from the mains) you can easily see how much RAM is installed by looking at the sticker on the side of the RAM sticks (or removing the sticks and replacing once the size has been noted). If you DO NOT have access to the inside, then I would suggest going to Start - control panel - system and it should tell you how much RAM is currently installed.
