-Subtract the first reading from the second reading.

-Since the tank holds 10 gallons, 10/4 is 2.5, so in this time, you used 2.5 gallons of gas. But we're trying to find out how far you went on one gallon.

-So divide the result of subtracting the two reading by 2.5

-Divide this result by 2.5 and you should have your MPG
