You can drive, but it's much more comfortable if you take the bus. From the airport, you take a taxi to TAPO (Mexico City bus station), and then go to the ADO (that's the largest bus company, travels to every place), and if you can take the ADO GL (Grand Luxe), it's very nice. It depends on what are you talking about. Natural resources? No doubt the overall region has more resources than Mexico. Manufactured goods? Most of them are already produced in China, but some of them take advantage of Mexico's closeness to the US. Tourism? Mexico is cheap and close to the US.
