Depends if you're lucky or not. Most trades train on the job. Schooling helps, especially if you need a certificate like in the Electrician field, but many people get into the trade just by doing it and being good at it. Of course you would be expected to know all building codes and bylaws, so school is your best option. And it might be difficult to find a journeyman to mentor you without schooling.

School is usually two years followed by apprenticing with a journeyman for several years until you can work on your own. By the way, it's spelled "Plumbing".
