For some reason, UL (the group which evaluates the safety of electrical products) says that you shouldn't daisy-chain multiple power strips, and that you shouldn't plug a power strip into an extension cord. Any instructions that came with your power strip would probably tell you the same thing.

The cord of an electric oven does not glow while the heating element glows. Why?

The cord is manufactured to have as low a resistance as possible, while the heating element is intentionally manufactured with a carefully controlled resistance. The current through the whole loop ... cord plus heater ... is determined by the resistance of the whole loop. The magnitude of the current 'I' is (E/R) ... E = the utility line voltage, R = resistance of the cord+heater. But the power dissipated by each individual resistance in the loop is proportional to the resistance of that section. P = I2R. So the heating element dissipates more power than the low-resistance line-cord does.

If friction can cause heat to be released letting a cord slide quickly through your hands will cause?

Letting a cord slide quickly through your hands may cause what is called a rope burn.

How does energy in an electrical outlet get to you?

the two metals conduct and transfer it through the cord

Why does a vacuum cleaner cord get warm?

The cord of a vacuum has a certain amount of resistance in it, even though it is made of copper. Forcing current through a resistor creates heat, and the cord is going to get warm after the machine is operated for a while.

On a appliance cord what is the conductor and insulator?

On the power cord of an electrical appliance, the only conductor you can see is the two (or three) little prongs on the very end of the cord, that get plugged into the wall. Everything else you can see is insulating material. (If it ever becomes possible to see any conductor anywhere else in the cord, then the cord is damaged and dangerous, and must be replaced.)

Does an extension cord use power if nothing is plugged into the other end?

If there is no load plugged into the cord there will be no power consumed. The only time the resistance of the cord will come into effect is when the circuit becomes energized through the load plugged into the end of the cord.

What is the difference between an extension cord and a computer cord?

An extension cord is a long power cord that plugs into an outlet and receives with an outlet. A computer cord just uses one long cable to transfer power to the computer from the outlet.

What cords do you need to power a TV?

Any extension cord that has the capacity to carry the amperage that the TV draws. Any extension cord that the hardware store sell will be sufficient to do the job.

Why can't you piggyback extension chords?

You can, but the length of the cord changed the power it provides. The longer the cord the greater the power loss.

Is it acceptable by OSHA to plug an extension cord into another extension cord-?

You can plug an extension cord into another extension cord. A extension cord is to help make doing something easier.

Does a long extension cord draw more power than a short extension cord?

No. However, a longer extension cord has higher resistance for a given wire gauge or size compared to a short extension cord and the voltage at the load device may drop so low that it doesn't work properly. This may also be accompanied by a noticeable rise in the temperature of the extension cord. As a rule, use the shortest extension cord that will get the job done. If the extension cord must be long, use one that has heavy gauge wire to minimize voltage drop at the load.

How do you set up outdoor Christmas lights?

You have to get an extension cord and plug them into it and then plug the extension cord somewhere in your house, if you do not have some type of outdoor outlet. You might try to get the extension cord through a window and then close the window as much as possible.

Can you use an extension cord for a portable air conditioner?

Yes, but precautions need to be taken to ensure that the extension cord is substantial enough to handle the current being passed through it.

Why some appliances perform quite when long extension cord are used?

An appliance which does not use much current will perform satisfactorily with a long extension cord. Any device which uses a lot of power (space heater, large power tools) will not perform well on a long ext cord unless the cord is large enough and rated to carry the required power.

What device is used to charge a hand held computer?

Could your singer sewing machine run more slowly if you are using an extension cord with it?

No it will not run more slowly. The power runs through it just as fast as you would normally. Same with all machines and all brands. I also have a singer sewing machine and i use a extension cord and it works normally.
