I am a caregiver living with two people who are partially autonomous, though each displays different examples of cognitive decline. They bathe themselves, but need varying degrees of assistance with activities of daily living (ADL's). My present scale is 127.50 per day for a complete day and evening (reduced from 150. as a courtesy to the family) plus taxes paid; I also have a 50. dollar per week food allowance besides being able to share family style meals I prepare. They need 24/7 care. Due to lack of caregiver availability in a rural area I often work two - three weeks on / four days off; or a week or two at a time with one - three days off. It is definitely NOT a 9-5 job on a wage of salary with a set amount of hours! I act as "embedded family".

Some friends feel I am not being paid well enough, others feel it is a most expensive service; for my area's wage scale it is fair to me, less expensive than an agency for them, and allows for consistency in the household.

What is a live-in caregiver?

A live-in caregiver is someone that comes to Canada on the Live-in Caregiver Program. The Live-in Caregiver Program (LIC) is an immigration program that brings temporary residents to Canada as live-in employees to work without supervision in a private household to care for children, care for seniors or care for people with disabilities. Live-in caregivers must live in the private home where they work in Canada. Because the Live-in Caregiver Program is worldwide, caregivers can be from any country in the world. Participants in this program may apply for permanent residency status within three years of arrival in Canada, after completing two years of employment as live-in caregivers. Live-in Caregivers have many rights and responsibilities. You can read more about these subjects and about the health, safety and finances of live-in caregivers on the website of the Canadian Caregivers Association, a non-profit organization that was established to protect the rights of Canadian families and live-in caregivers from all over Canada: http://www.live-in.ca

About sponsoring a caregiver?

Caregivers are individuals who are qualified to care independently for children, the elderly or people who have disabilities. There is a shortage of Canadians who are available to work as live-in Caregivers. In order to keep up with such a demand the live-in Caregiver Program was developed to bring qualified foreign people who are available to work on a live-in basis. The host family, which is the employer, will pay the caregiver no less than the minimum wage set by the province in which the caregiver is working. From the salary above, the employer (host family) will deduct specific amounts in order to pay various contributions. Part of the contributions is paid by the caregiver, part of them by your employer and there are contributions paid both by the caregiver and the employer. The principal deductions are:· Room and board (the amount will be specified in your contract)· Income tax· Employment insurance· Canada pension plan
