I have a 98 Chevy s10 vortek and I am rebuilding it, I am not getting coolent flow and was checking out the thermostat first before ripping off the water pump. I tested the therm. in boiling water and it opens only about a less then 1/16", is the water pump out or is the thermostat out? Thermostat. It should open almost a full inch. 1/16" is not nearly enough.
A standard 8x8x16 2 core block contains about .25cf of open space

It doesn't have any open syllables.
depending how u open it if you open it all the way it will take 30mins or less and if you half way open it will take up to an hr
The thermostat will not open properly when installed backwards. The coolant will not flow and the engine could overheat.
when the thermostat will not open when placed in a cup of boiling water
Thermostat is probably stuck in the open position or the system was not bled properly. Bleed the system properly and if it still exhibits the same symptoms, replace the thermostat. You may have purchased a bad new one.
That is about normal.
No heat, engine doesn't cool down properly, after the engine warms up to a point where the thermostat should open up, the coolant lines don't have a fairly uniform temperature throughout.
place thermostat in an old mug or cup, boil some water. pour into cup, thermostat should open slightly about 4mm
U take the thermostat out, get a pot of water, put the thermostat in it and start it to boiling. When the water reaches the temp that the thermostat is designed to operate at it should open , if not , it is defective
Thermostat can stick open or closed. If sticks open, car will take longer to warm up because coolant is constantly flowing thru engine. If thermostat is stuck closed, engine will eventually overheat. In order for all emission systems to work properly, thermostat needs to be working. For 1995 GEO Prizm, if thermostat is working correctly, car should maintain proper operating temperature after is warmed up. If any doubt about thermostat, changev it every few years as is inexpensive and easy to replace.
on the vr6 engine the factory thermostat is 180 but the engine should not get over 210 at 180 the thermostat starts to open and is fully open at 195
You should gas mileage will suffer otherwise
The 160 thermostat should open about 20 degrees sooner than a 180.
A bad thermostat could be stuck open or stuck closed. Drop it in boiling water and it should open. Then close when cooled off.
