Unless the housing is damaged, there is no reason to replace it. Just replace the gasket.

follow the top radiator hose to locate the thermostat housing, remove the hose from the housing then unbolt the housing. remove and replace the thermostat and rebolt the housing to the motor, replace the hose The housing is made of cheap metal and should be replaced. It is important to "seat" the thermostat properly. Also, it is much easier to replace and remove the thermostat housing if you first remove the timing belt housing.
To replace the thermostat on a 2002 Nissan Altima first drain out the coolant. Then proceed the to locate the thermostat housing which is by the engine compartment fuse box. Unbolt the housing and replace the thermostat.

Follow the top radiator hose and it will take you to the thermostat housing it is under the housing.

remove the 2 bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the intake manifold which the upper radiator hose attaches to the housing then just pull the thermostat out and replace.
The air cleaner will have to be removed to gain access to the thermostat. the thermostat is housed in the water inlet at the engine. Remove the housing and the thermostat will come out. Clean the old gasket material from the housing, replace the thermostat in the same direction as the old one, and reassemble the housing and air cleaner.
The thermostat housing on a Chrysler 302.7 L engine can be removed by loosening the 3 housing bolts. Remove the water hose and the housing will come off. Reverse the process to replace with a new housing.
