On a halter for everyday use nylon is the best. Most of these halters run between $15-20. Plus another $10 for a lead rope. If your buying a leather halter or leather grooming halter this will probably be $50 and up. If a show halter is what your looking for you will be spending much more. The lower end show halters that have silver plate can be had for around $200. A nicer show halter with sterling silver start around $500 and go up from there.

What should you use to catch a horse without his halter?

If you have nothing to catch him with and just need to lead him somewhere, grab a chunk of mane behind his ears where the halter normally sits and put gentle pressure on it. If he is well halter trained he should think he's wearing a halter and you should be able to lead him around. If you have a rope, loop it around his neck where the halter sits, again he'll think he's wearing a halter. This is only good for leading him around, obviously you can't tie him with either method.

What is basic item called when moving horse from one place to another?

A lead rope and halter is used. The halter goes over the horses snout and ears (like a dog collar in a sense) and the lead rope connects to a ring on the halter.

What is a halter used for?

Well when the horse was a baby you should have kept a halter on a few days after he was born to get used to it. If you did not do that than you can get a halter and put it on loose so that it is not hurting him/her but tight enough so they cant rip it off. when the horse gets used to that then you can clip a lead rope to his halter and ask for a walk and it will take time but if the horse is still a baby it will take less time then a matured horse

My horse runs away win I get close to him with a halter what should I do And I can walk up to him and rub him with my hands or a brush but not a halter.?

He's pushing you to see what you'll let him get away with when you come to Halter him. Start bribing him with Carrots whenever you bring the halter with you to get him ready to work. Once he knows you have Goodies for him when you have the halter, he'll be less likely to run off.

When should a foal begin halter breaking?

The day it's born. Seriously, halter breaking is a lot easier when your foal is already used to humans. As soon as it's born, rub it all over, touch it everywhere and talk to it. This will "imprint" the foal and make handling it much easier. Every day, go play with the foal, put the halter on and off, touch it all over, get it used to the lead rope, etc. Then just try light tugging on the halter, as soon as it moves even one step forwards, release the pressure to reward the foal. Then ask for 2 steps, 3, etc and soon you will have a nicely halter-broke filly or colt :)
