You should first research the places you want to see (Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, cable cars, Alcatraz Island, North Beach, the Zoo, the Cliff House, Market Street, and Chinatown are all good tourist locations) and find the cost to get into each. You can get inexpensive meals but you have to go where the locals go, like small restaurants in Chinatown or North Beach. If you allow yourself about $300 for entrance fees to all the different tourist spots plus between $40 and $50 per day for one good meal and a couple of small ones, you should be okay. I would definitely suggest that you bring extra cash, though, because San Francisco is a great restaurant city and you may find a place where you'd like to splurge. When you take the cable car, take the one that goes to the Buena Vista bar just north of Fisherman's Wharf and have their clam chowder soup and an Irish Coffee. That's a San Francisco day, for sure...
