The calendar you are referring to is the Julian calendar, which was introduced by Julius Caesar.

The Gregorian calendar, introduced by Gregory XIII in 1582, shortened the day by 10 minutes and 48 seconds. It also dropped 10 days from the years 325 to 1582.

Romans what role did they play in the measurement of time?

The Romans followed the standard sundial method of telling time for the most part. They also had water clocks, but only the wealthy could afford them. In reality, most Romans simply looked up at the sun to see what time it was. Julius Caesar, however, reorganized the calendar for the calculation of dates and years and his calendar, called the Julian calendar, is the basis for our present day calendar.

Why does the whole world recognize the christian calendar as its standard?

Technically it's not the christian calendar, but the roman calendar. All the months are named after greek/roman gods. same with the days of the week. During the time of Christ(0 A.D.) Romans ruled over virtually the whole world. They spread their culture and language(latin) throughout their kingdom. And I don't think the whole world runs off this calendar. The Chinese calendar is at like 7000 thousand years i think.

Who first started the practice of adding days to the calendar?

The Romans "invented" the calendar as we know it. Without researching it, the first calendar with leap days, with the 12 months as we know the calendar, was the Julian calendar named after Julius Caesar. It had an error of about 3 days in 400 years. This calendar was replaced by the much more accurate Gregorian calendar by decree of Pope Gregory in the late 1600's in the Catholic countries and accepted by most Protestant and other countries in the 1700's. There was an adjustment of 12 or 13 days in the calendar at that time. The Gregorian calendar is the calendar we use today. Prior to the Julian calendar, days were added as needed in all calendars including the one which began in March and had only 10 months ! This is why the 12th month, December, comes from the Latin word for ten. The Mayan and Chinese calendars, among others, were known for their accuracy and would have had to add days also.

Where did the names for the months come from?

Back before the time of modern civilization, before the time of Romans, the calendar was a very confusing thing. The Romans, being the mathematical and civilized, felt a need to recognize the system and created the calendar that we follow today. Originally, they used only ten months. Later the Roman mathematicians moved on to twelve months structure by adding two months at the beginning of the year. this placement was not to avoid interference with the placement of the holidays located at the end of the year.
