Depends how many trips you want to make. One ticket is 1.7€, but a CARNET of 10 is 12€. If you're just nipping around in the central area, a MOBILIS ticket costs 6.10€ for unlimited journeys in a single day. Travelling outside the gates of Paris (Zones 1&2) is extra on this one, but only about 2€ per zone. Tourists generally don't go outside the central zone, anyway, except for La Défense, which is in zone 3. Finally, a PARIS VISITE ticket for one day includes unlimited travel in zones 1 & 2, plus reductions of 20-30% on various monuments and attractions, and costs 9.3€.
Children under 10 go half-price on most tickets, and there is a weekend ticket for under-26s called TICKET JEUNES WEEKEND, usable only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, costing an incredible 3.40€.
NOTE: The PARIS-VISITE ticket has a special ID card which goes with it, so you need to buy it at the metro station, OR online (http://www.parisinfo.com/reservation-express/produits/paris-visite); the ticket and card are then mailed to you; but allow 14 days for delivery to USA, 7 days for Europe.
All these tickets are valid for Metro, bus and RER within the stated zones.
