It depended on the season. The Romans got up at dawn and worked until noon. Therefore, in the summer they worked from 4:30 am, which made about 7 ½ hours’ work. In the winter they got up at 7:30, which made about 4 ½ hours' work. They ate a light lunch at noon (at the end of the 7th hour). Then they went to the baths or had a siesta. They had their main meal, dinner at the end of the 9th hour (2:30 in the summer, 1:30 in the winter). The poor went to bed at "The end of the day" (at the end of the 12th hour); that is, at dusk because they got up at dawn. The patronus, the rich man who hired clients to do jobs for them, also got up at dawn. However, not all rich people had to get up that early.
The Romans day was divided daylight into 12 equal parts. Therefore, the duration of the hours was longer in the summer than in the winter because daylight is longer in the winter. The hours in the summer lasted about 1 hours and 15 minutes, while the hours in the winter lasted about 45 minutes:
