according to my dad it was 5 gallons for a dollar

From 1930 to 1939 the average cost of a gallon of Gasoline was $.10 (ten cents) per gallon or 10 gallons per dollar. This price was due in part to the Great Depression. Information found from the National newspaper's of the time, viewed at the main library.
