It depends on the size of the dog, how hot it is, how much they are exercising and other factors. Sometimes if it is hot my medium size dog will easily drink two quarts of water a day.
Edit: If I run my working dog hard through the agility course a couple of times and through controlled bite work, he'll drink a quart and a half coming off the training field.
Typically, an 80 lb. dog needs (as originally posted) a couple of quarts a day in hot weather. Clean the container daily (a quick scrub, no soap needed) and error on the side of caution -- too much is better than too little. If I'm gone for the day, I set out two containers so if one gets knocked over, the other still serves.
Provide fresh water daily. You'll both be much happier w/o the dog drinking bacterial infected water and having related problems.
